Introduction

Limestone is a sedimentary rock made of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), usually in the form of calcite or aragonite. However, minor constituents of clay, iron carbonate, feldspar, pyrite, and quartz is also commonly present. In many cases, the grains are microscopic fragments of fossil animal shells.




Occurrence

About 20% to 25% of sedimentary rock is carbonate rock, and most of this is limestone. Limestone is found in sedimentary sequences as old as 2.7 billion years.[58] However, the compositions of carbonate rocks show an uneven distribution in time in the geologic record. About 95% of modern carbonates are composed of high-magnesium calcite and aragonite.



Typical Uses

Limestone is widely used in architectural applications for walls, decorative trim and veneer. It is less frequently used as a sculptural material, because of its porosity and softness, however, it is a common base material. It may be found in both bearing (structural) and veneer applications.
